The process of applying for and receiving a medical license in California takes about three to six months. The Medical Board of California cautions that you may not even see a status update for 60 days. As such, you can expect it to take at least this long to appear on the CA medical board license lookup.

Keep in mind that the three to six months is for the application. You must have already spent several years to meet the requirements to apply.

Once you get your license, you will receive a pocket identification card and a wall certificate within two to four weeks. These help eliminate the need to use the Medical Board of California license lookup system.

How Do I Get a California Medical License?

Everyone that appears on a California medical license lookup must have met strict requirements before even applying. They must graduate from an accredited medical school, with foreign medical schools requiring approval from the Medical Board of California.

Before you can receive your medical license, you need to finish 36 months of board-approved postgraduate training. Keep in mind that you will need to get a Postgraduate Training License within 180 days of enrolling in that training. Those 36 months must include at least 24 months of training that is continuous in one program.

You will also have to pass State Medical Boards and have fingerprints taken to receive your license. There are several options for the exams you must pass, including FLEX, NBME, and USMLE. You will have to report any malpractice actions or criminal history during the application, including DUIs but not including minor traffic offenses.

You cannot skip any of the requirements and still be licensed and appear on the California State Medical Board license lookup.

How Much Does a California Medical License Cost?

The Postgraduate Training License will be the first medical license you get in California. This requires an application fee of $491, which includes a non-refundable fee for processing your fingerprints.

When you transition to a physician’s and surgeon’s license, you will have to pay $808. This is the initial licensing fee. The good news is that there is a discount of 50% of this fee, bringing the total down to $416.50. To get that discount, you must be in a CFPC, RCPSC, or ACGME training program when you apply.

In addition to that initial licensing fee, there is a $491 application fee for the physician’s and surgeon’s license. Once again, this includes a non-refundable fee to process fingerprints. This fee does not apply if you are transitioning from the Postgraduate Training License to the physician’s and surgeon’s license.
